Chapter: 17 - The Hunt

Goal: Understand how setting influences story emotion

Today's Reading Detective Work

What is Literary Craft?

Craft = The Author's Toolbox

Literary craft is HOW authors write, not just WHAT they write about.

Key Craft Elements:

  • Vivid descriptions - Paint pictures with words
  • Sentence variety - Mix short and long sentences
  • Dialogue - Characters speaking naturally
  • Setting details - Time, place, atmosphere
  • Pacing - Speed up or slow down action

Setting: More Than Just Location

Physical Place

Caves, forests, mountains

Time Period

WHEN the story occurs

Prehistoric future world

Atmosphere

The MOOD of the place

Mysterious, dangerous, welcoming

Cultural Context

Tribal laws, ceremonies, values

Think-Aloud & Model

Let's analyze this together:

"Alex looked around at the faces surrounding him in the flickering firelight. Some were friendly, some were curious, and some seemed to be weighing him, trying to decide if[...]

My thinking process:

Setting details: "flickering firelight" creates mood
Because: Fire = warmth but also uncertainty (flickering)
Craft technique: Author uses lighting to show Alex's uncertain position

Guided Practice & Sentence Frames

Practice Question:

How does the author use setting to show Alex's internal conflict about leaving?

Sentence Frames to Help You:

  • "The author describes the setting as _______ to show _______."

Focus: Advanced craft techniques and setting analysis

Chapter: 19 - Stipa-ah

Goal: Analyze complex setting and mood relationships

Today's Advanced Analysis

Advanced Setting Analysis

Setting as Character

In Chapter 19, notice how setting almost becomes a character itself!

Look for:

  • Setting influencing action - How place changes what characters do
  • Setting reflecting emotions - Mood matching feelings
  • Setting driving conflict - Environment creating problems
  • Setting foreshadowing - Place hints at future events

Craft Technique: Contrast

Authors use contrasting settings to:

Show Change
Safe → Dangerous
Create Tension
Known → Unknown
Highlight Growth
Old → New
Build Suspense
Calm → Chaotic
Emphasize Themes
Light → Dark
Develop Character
Comfort → Challenge

Signal Words for Setting Contrast:

However, meanwhile, on the other hand, in contrast, unlike, suddenly, but

Think-Aloud: Expert Analysis

Let's think like literary experts:

"As Alex approached Stipa-ah, the familiar sounds of the tribe faded behind him, replaced by an otherworldly silence that seemed to press against his consciousness."

Expert Analysis Process:

  • Craft technique: Sensory contrast (warm/chatter vs cold/silence)
  • Setting shift: Community space to isolated space
  • Emotional impact: Comfort transforms to anxiety
  • Foreshadowing: Silence "pressing" suggests coming tension

Guided Check & Advanced Frames

Practice Question:

How does the author use contrasting settings to show Alex's internal journey?

Advanced Analysis Frames:

  • "The author contrasts _______ with _______ to show _______."
  • "This setting shift from _______ to _______ reflects Alex's _______.
  • "By describing _______, the author creates _______ which helps readers understand _______.
